Rice Factory: Rice Milling Process, History & Modern Technology

By Business Factories
July 18, 2026

Know about the history of Rice Factory –

Rice factories emerged from ancient manual hand-pounding into a Power House of industry. Riichi Satake remodeled the industry through the discovery of the power-driven milling machine in 1896.

For the global population, polish and soft grains were produced on a massive scale.

Ancient History-

It is said that ancient evidence of rice came from the Yangtze River basin of China. After that this cultivation extensively expanded in the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and across the globe. This earlier cultivation had been spreading from China for trade routes and colonization.

On the other hand, rice cultivation expanded separately in the river delta around 3000 years ago.

Progression of Rice Milling Technology:-

Hand processing-

In ancient times, farmers used heavy motors and pestles to smash husks and polish rice. Intensive category labour runs the machine and yield per hectare production is very low.

Water and windmills-

South Carolina in the US and some parts of Asia became agricultural hubs and these nations used water powered wheels and animal traction to transform Milling stones.

The First Power Mill-

Riichi Satake introduced Japan’s first Power driven rice milling machine and this machine is also called vertical abrasive rice milling machine. It is ideal for large scale commercial factories today we depend on.

New Automation System of Rice Factories:-

Many advanced mechanisms adopted to bring revolution in the industry’s outcome. This is a unique emery-and-rubber roller Sheller which was invented by Japan.

In recent times automated shorters computer control meaning and colour sorting optical machines are used for industrial facilities. These systems bring a big difference for the polishing process and reduce grain breakage during milling.

Amazing Manufacturing Journey of Rice Factory:–

Pre cleaning-

Labour collects freshly harvested, sun-dried paddy from the land and sends all at the factory in the truck. Firstly, all the grains are cleaned by the workers and with the help of vibratory sieves that whisk away straw, mud, stones and other contaminant elements.

Dehusking (Hulling)-

With heavy rubber roller machines the paddy is cleaned and then rubbed all paddies together. Due to the friction, inedible outer husks can be removed from the paddy.

Separation of paddy-

There is a mixture of the dehusked brown rice and un-hulled paddy grains that can be separated by a paddy separated machine.

Milling and Whitening-

In this industry, milling and whitening are primary steps that modify harvested, unhusked paddy into the polished rice found in local markets.

Through the milling process, the hard outer husk can be removed to create brown rice.

Global Impact:-

Lately, the majority of rice production and processing have been found in Asia. On the other hand, in India there is a reason for West Bengal being the largest rice producing state in the country- industry represents a vast economic sector in agriculture. Through the modern processing mills, ancient hand-pounding methods have been fundamentally replaced.
