June 23, 2026

The Tea Factory in Ooty is nestled perfectly on the winding roads towards Doddabetta Peak. The facility is located just 4 km from Doddabetta Peak and 5 km from the Ooty bus station. It’s a prime attraction providing an engaging leaf to the cup experience to all. The factory, along with its attached museum, traces the rich history of Nilgiri tea, providing aromatic tours and complimentary tasting. Just imagine a scene where you are allowed to sip your favourite drink directly from the production centre, amidst beautiful mountain views and lush green landscapes.

Know the interesting journey of tea!

Visitors who step inside the factory are immediately immersed in the rich and earthy aroma of tea. One interesting thing about the Tea Factory Ooty is that it allows guests to witness the entire manufacturing process through its specialised walled viewing gallery. Here, you learn about the various phases of tea production.

  • Withering

First, leaves are harvested and then spread out on large trays. Warm air is circulated to reduce the moisture content, making them pliable.

  • Rolling

Then the softened leaves are pressed through the large rolling machines, which break down the cell walls. The process releases the entire natural juices from the leaves.

  • Crush, Tear and Curl

To achieve the granular texture of standard black tea, the leaves undergo the CTC process. It includes the passage through stainless steel crushers.

  • Oxidation and drying

During this phase, the crushed leaves are left to oxidise or ferment, which gives them a dark colour and a deep flavour. Also, they need to pass through the massive drying machines so all leftover moisture can be removed.

Tasting and souvenir tours!

No visit to the Ooty tea factory is complete without visiting the tasting counters. Visitors receive complimentary tea with their entry ticket. The steaming hot cup of locally brewed tea is served with aromatic spices such as cardamom, masala, or ginger. One can enjoy these brews while taking in panoramic views of mountain peaks and beautiful surrounding valleys.

You will also find the chocolate shops there, where individuals can buy a diverse range of freshly packed Nilgiri products, including organic black tea, rich green tea, and speciality chocolates flavoured with tea.

Know about the Tea Museum!

The Tea Museum is connected to the production floor. The museum is there to raise awareness of the cultural and economic importance of tea, showcasing the evolution of the beverage across the globe. There are pictorial displays and vintage antique machinery that allow visitors to learn about the ancient origins of tea in China and its presence in Europe. It also represents the cultivation across India and the Nilgiris. The museum is a kind of educational stroll that traces how tea became a widely consumed beverage worldwide.

Conclusion!

If you are planning to visit the tea factory in Ooty, it’s not just a mere sightseeing stop. It’s an immersive sensory journey that not only educates you about tea’s evolution but also offers an amazing experience of sipping your favourite beverage while taking in the beautiful mountains. It perfectly captures the rustic charm of Nilgiris, blending architecture, industrial engineering, and the rich aromas of flavours, providing an unforgettable experience for an individual.
