YIL Ordnance Factory: Yantra India Limited Overview
YIL ordnance factory!
YIL (Yantra India Limited) plays an important role in the modernisation of India’s defence industrial complex. It is one of the seven defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) incorporated by the government of India. It is a specialised engineering and manufacturing powerhouse that manufactures weapons, military equipment, and ammunition for the Indian Armed Forces.
Yantra India limited operates various manufacturing units in the country. Its headquarter is in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
An overview!
YIL ordnance factory is a premier DPSU, created in October 2021, when a 220-year-old ordnance factory was split into specialised corporations. The primary mission of the YIL ordnance factory is to boost indigenous defence manufacturing so our country doesn’t rely on imports, thereby supporting the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
The origin of YIL: its birth!
- The initialization
Initially, for more than two centuries, the Ordnance Factory Board functioned as a subordinate office of the Ministry of defence. At that time, the factory was the backbone of India’s military hardware. Later, the government sought to transform it into a competitive and accountable structure.
Later, in 2021, the YIL Ordnance factory board was dissolved, and its 41 production units were reorganised into seven corporate entities. The transition provides the facility with greater functionality and higher financial and functional autonomy.
The seven different corporate entities are:
- Munitions India Limited (MIL)
The factory manufactures ammunition and explosives.
- Armoured vehicles nigam limited (AVNM)
It manufactures tanks and other military vehicles.
- Advanced weapons and Equipment India Limited (AWEIL)
The factory focuses heavily on weapons and equipment.
- Troop comforts limited (TCL)
The facility is highly focused on producing troop clothing or other comfort items.
- Yantra India Limited (YIL)
The facility is producing military-grade components and ancillary products for the Armed forces.
- India Optel Limited (IOL)
The facility builds optoelectronic devices.
- Gliders India Limited (GIL)
The facility manufactures military parachutes.
Financial success with export!
The transformation yields impressive operational and financial outcomes. With corporatisation, the factory’s production value has increased. Also, the facility is growing in defence exports.
The facility has grown so fast that it has been awarded Miniratna Category-I status. The title comes with authority that allows the facility to make large-money transactions, such as spending up to rupees 500 Crore on new projects, without the need for government approval.
What does YIL produce?
YIL specialises in the hard and heavy manufacturing of metal parts. You can think of it as a hardware maker. They create strong, empty metal casings for rockets, bombs, and large bullets. Once the facility prepares the empty metal shells, other factories fill them with explosives. Several key items produced by YIL are:
- Ammunition hardware
It prepared strong metal bodies for rockets and artillery shells.
The facility is preparing metal parts for large battle tanks and armoured combat vehicles. The facility is using high-gradehigh-grade materials, such as high-quality aluminium alloys and carbon fibres, to create tough, lightweight military equipment.
Conclusion!
YIL is supporting Make in India and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. Since the facility can manufacture weapons for the armed forces, the country is not dependent on other countries for defence. Even the facility is exporting specialised rocket pods to other countries, enabling India to build world-class military gear. In the end, the facility is working successfully, ensuring that the country’s soldiers are well supplied with all the equipment they require for defence and to stay strong.
