The metal and steel factory Ishapore is a pioneering factory established in 1892. The company is the birthplace of authentic steel production in India. Primarily, the unit operates under Yantra India Limited. The factory is located in 24 Parganas, West Bengal. It is a primary defense production unit working under the operation of the Ministry of Defense. The unit is serving as the backbone of India’s heavy military equipment. The factory specializes in casting, forging, and rolling of high-strength alloys.

According to the data, the factory’s origin has been traced back to the Gun and Factory in 1872. However, metallurgical operations were introduced only in 1892. This is the first large-scale steel production in India.
With the demand growth in the industry, the metallurgical plant was then shifted to Ishapore in 1905. Later, over time, the factory evolved into a highly integrated metallurgical complex with the capability to produce defense metals.

Today, the factory is a one-stop shop for all ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical operations. It comprises massive forging presses, rolling mills, and other state-of-the-art heat treatment processes.

- Gun barrel manufacturing
The facility produces steel for artillery or small arms gun barrels. These require massive strength and toughness to withstand a high range of pressure.
- Cartridge cases
The factory casts and forges cartridge brass and variants of steel that are required to be used at various military platforms like anti-aircraft ordnance.
- Armored components
The manufacturing unit is processing special steel alloys and blooms that are required to be used in the production of heavy military vehicles like battle tanks.
Here, the production is completed under technical specifications. Not only does the finished product undergo rigorous testing, but also the raw material undergoes rigorous processes like hot forging to achieve the required properties such as strength.
Also, the manufactured forged components are transferred to machining shops. There, they have to undergo complex turning, threading, and boring processes to meet the specifications required for applications.

Recently, the facility dispatched its first consignment of SAIL’s Bokaro steel plant in 2025.
